China Golden Week 2026: Dates and Booking Priorities
Plan China travel around October Golden Week 2026: the September holiday bridge, train booking dates, a practical booking order and a slower itinerary.
For a flexible China trip in autumn 2026, we recommend avoiding September 25–October 7, including the possible annual-leave bridge. If your dates are fixed, simplify the route, confirm essential transport and choose suitable cancellation terms. Staying in one city reduces the number of reservations your holiday depends on. These are planning recommendations; crowd levels vary by place and day.
Official holidays and the longer travel window
| Dates in 2026 | Status |
|---|---|
| September 25–27 | Official Mid-Autumn break |
| September 28–30 | Ordinary working days; possible personal leave |
| October 1–7 | Official National Day break, often called Golden Week |
| September 20 and October 10 | Adjusted working days |
The State Council’s schedule establishes the official breaks and adjusted workdays. Three approved leave days on September 28–30 can create a 13-day personal holiday, September 25–October 7. This published bridge example requires employer approval. Participation and daily visitor numbers have not been measured here.
China combines nationwide holiday arrangements with tiaoxiu, rearranging certain workdays and rest days, and pinjia, using personal leave to extend a break. Similar bridges exist elsewhere, including France. Our holiday calendar distinguishes official holidays, possible leave and adjusted workdays so visitors can consider the whole window.
Choose your next step
| Your situation | Do this first | Keep this flexible |
|---|---|---|
| Dates can change | Compare complete trips outside the highlighted window | City order and number of nights |
| Flights fixed, domestic travel unbooked | Choose one base and check essential onward transport | Day trips and extra cities |
| Hotels and trains confirmed | Check attraction reservations; group activities by area | One main activity a day, with an alternative |
| A necessary train is unavailable | Compare another departure, station or day | Changeable accommodation and optional visits |
These are editorial choices. A simpler route can still include busy attractions. For choosing dates across the year, use our off-peak guide.
Calculate train booking dates
The ordinary rail sales window is 15 days including the sale day: subtract 14 calendar days from your journey. See the 12306 announcement and government booking guidance. Check for operator adjustments.
| Journey date | Calculated first sale date, 2026 |
|---|---|
| September 25 | September 11 |
| September 28 | September 14 |
| October 1 | September 17 |
| October 4 | September 20 |
| October 7 | September 23 |
| October 8 | September 24 |
This table makes no claim about current availability. Check the departure station’s release time in the official lookup and set a reminder in China time. Keep the exact station name with it: a city may have several stations.
If tickets are unavailable, read the 12306 waitlist guidance. Your journey remains unconfirmed until a ticket is issued. Set your own decision deadline, then compare another train or an extra night. Include any cross-city transfer when considering a different station. Our rail guide covers wider journey preparation.
Put essential bookings first
- List immovable commitments: international arrival, departure and essential appointments.
- Check transport between them. If sales have not opened, keep alternatives and cancellation deadlines visible.
- Compare hotel location, transfer effort and cancellation terms; keep uncertain sections changeable where practical.
- Check each attraction’s official booking channel, release date, identity-document requirements and closure notices. For Beijing, the Palace Museum ticket site is one example.
- Arrange meals and neighborhood visits around confirmed reservations, retaining a nearby alternative.
A seven-night plan with fewer moves
For a first visit focused on Beijing, use this editorial pacing template, subject to actual opening and booking conditions:
- Arrival and night 1: settle into one hotel; keep the evening light.
- Days 2–3: one principal visit daily, with other activities nearby.
- Day 4: leave room for a rescheduled visit, weather or rest.
- Days 5–6: add a confirmed excursion or explore locally. Check the return journey before leaving the city.
- Night 7: stay in your onward-flight city; allow a separate transfer if it differs from your base.
If several cities remain essential, our individual itinerary planning service can help organize the route and pace.
Is October 8 automatically quieter?
October 8 falls outside the scheduled 2026 National Day break. Compare actual transport, hotel rates and attraction availability before choosing it. There is no automatic price reduction or crowd guarantee for the first day after a holiday.
