First-Time China Checklist
Community-sourced checklist for first-time visitors to China.
A quick starter list compiled from recurring advice in r/travelchina, r/chinatravel, and r/gochinatrip. Always verify current rules before you go.
Before you fly
- Set up mobile payments (Alipay first, WeChat Pay as backup). Many travelers report needing both because some cards or vendors fail in one app.
- Install translation tools and download offline packs.
- Install maps that work well in China (Amap/Baidu/Apple Maps are commonly suggested).
- Prepare a VPN if you rely on blocked apps (Google, Instagram, YouTube, etc). VPN sites are often blocked in China, so set it up before arrival.
- Bring a plug adaptor and keep your phone charged; many daily tasks are app-based.
- Install a ride-hailing app (Didi is commonly used and can be accessed inside Alipay/WeChat in some cases).
On arrival
- Confirm your payment apps can actually pay in China (some users report cards fail, verification delays, or full activation only after arrival).
- Keep a small amount of cash for edge cases (even if you expect to pay mostly by phone).
- Expect security scans at metro stations and for high-speed rail.
- Avoid tight connections on your first travel day; security checks and stations can take longer than expected.
In day-to-day travel
- Many restaurants use QR menus and in-app ordering. WeChat scanning can be required in some places.
- Expect limited English in many settings; translation apps help a lot.
- Learn a few basic phrases if you can.
Trip pacing reminders
- Book popular trains or tickets early during peak periods.
- Avoid major holidays if you can; crowds and prices spike.
